Unbound and hydraulically bound mixtures - Part 2: test methods for laboratory reference density and water content - Proctor compaction

This document specifies a method for determining the relationship between the water content and the dry density of an unbound or hydraulically bound material after compaction under specified test conditions using Proctor compaction. The test results provide an estimate of the density that can be achieved for the material on site and constitute a reference parameter for evaluating the density of the material layer once compacted. It applies only to unbound or hydraulically bound mixtures made from aggregates used for road construction and civil engineering. It is not applicable to soils in earthworks. The results of this test method can be used as a basis for comparing mixtures before using them in pavement construction. These test results also make it possible to deduce the water content at which the material is easiest to compact to achieve a given dry density. This test is applicable to mixtures with variable upper aggregate sizes (D) of up to 63 mm and with an oversize not exceeding 25 % by mass.
