Testing aggregates. Methods for determination of particle shape - Flakiness index

The flakiness index test is a very important test to be performed on aggregate giving the percentage of flaky aggregate present in the total aggregate sample. Aggregate particles are classified as flaky when they have a thickness of less than 0.6 of their mean sieve sizes, this size is taken as the mean of the limiting sieve apertures used for determining the size fraction in which the particle occurs.
